Zuiderdam: Scheduled for October 2017 Refurbishment

Holland America’s ms Zuiderdam is a Vista-class vessel with sister-ships ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam and ms Westerdam.  The 1916-passenger ship was christened in the Port of Fort Lauderdale in 2002 making its maiden voyage on December 14 following its christening.  Zuiderdam received its most recent renovations in 2008 while in dry dock and is scheduled for refurbishment later this year for an almost two-week period running from towards the end of October to the end of the first week of November.

The Zuiderdam’s upgrade is part of Holland America’s $300 million investment plan in updating entertainment, dining and suites across its fleet of Signature-, Vista- and R-Class ships which began in December of 2015 with ms Eurodam and will finish with ms Zaandam in 2018.  While in dry dock in Freeport, Zuiderdam top-level staterooms will receive new furnishings, colors, amenities and upgrades.  Suites’ new furniture includes a sofa, lounge chairs and desk chair added to the living area.  Contemporary carpeting and wall covers will give rooms a more present-day feel; bathroom suites will receive a makeover with makeup vanity while bedrooms will be upgraded as well with a quartz stone top on each desk, dresser and nightstands. Added amenities are in-cabin coffee and expresso machines and binoculars for use during sailing.  In addition to cosmetic revamping and furnishings, electronic enhancements include a USB outlet added over the bed’s headboard, LED reading lights and lighted closet rod.

The over 950-foot-long vessel’s suites will also feature a new interactive TV system with complimentary on-demand movies.  The system will also allow the guest access to the ship’s daily program, shipboard restaurant information, spa services and billing information.  Following the dry dock in Freeport, Bahamas, suite guests will enjoy mimosas “on the house” during breakfast.

Zuiderdam’s most recent refurbishment was in 2008 in which the ship underwent a substantial overhaul with the addition of the Pinnacle Bar, Screening Room movie theater, Explorations Café, expanded shopping area in addition to flat-screen TVs and new bedding to all of the vessel’s cabins.

This ship has garnered numerous awards most recently, 2015, in which Zuiderdam was named “Best Mid-Size Cruise Ship for Value” by cruisecritic.com; Mid-Size vessels carry between 1,200 to 1,999 passengers.  Passengers are welcomed aboard upon entering the award-winning vessel by a giant Waterford Crystal Seahorse suspended in a three-story atrium.  Onboard décor features art-deco inspired elevators in addition to works of art from Andy Warhol, Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Ben.  Guests have a multitude of dining options with the elegant two-story Vista Dining Room, The Pinnacle Grill specializing in steak and fish, The Verandah, Canaletto Restaurant, Explorations Café, the buffet at the Lido Restaurant as well as complimentary in-room dining service available 24-hours per day.

Evenings aboard the vessel guests can find entertainment in the Vista Lounge Theater featuring musical performances of singers and dancers or a comedian, Piano Bar and many lounges – Explorers Lounge, Neptune Lounge and Vista Show Lounge.  Sports enthusiasts can enjoy beverages and game-action on televisions in the Sports Bar while “night owls” frequent the Casino for slot machines, poker, blackjack, craps and roulette as well the B.B. King Blues Club for live performances inspired by the legendary club on Beale Street in Memphis.

Zuiderdam coalesces modern design, striking aesthetics and up-to-date technology.

Prior to dry dock, the first of Holland America’s Vista-class ships will sail Northern Europe and Scandinavia including this month’s newsletter “Spotlight,” Copenhagen followed by repositioning to the Eastern Seaboard with voyages sailing out of New York and Boston eventually disembarking in Fort Lauderdale.  One Holland America’s most popular is scheduled to sail a similar schedule in 2018 with Southern Caribbean voyages out of Fort Lauderdale prior to transatlantic repositioning for Northern Europe and Scandinavian sailings and then the Eastern Seabord in the fall.  Special Needs Group is pleased to provide service to all Holland America vessels including Zuiderdam.
