Special Needs Travelers: London 2012 Olympic Games

The Olympic Games are a great opportunity for travel, cultural diversity, and wonderful family entertainment! For travelers who are thinking about attending the 2012 Olympic Games, it’s time to start making plans (if you haven’t already).

According to the LOCOG (London Olympic Games Organizing Committee) Chief Executive, Paul Deighton, the 2012 London games are promising to be the “most diverse and inclusive Games possible.” As a testament to this promise, there are a variety of accommodations and resources available for special needs travelers. Below, we have outlined some helpful information:

Tickets: A variety of accessible options are available for special needs travelers who will be attending the Games, including seats for the visually impaired and the deaf. Wheelchair seats are also available, and include a companion seat. For more information about ticketing, visit: http://www.tickets.london2012.com/about_tickets_p2.html.

At the Games: For travelers who plan to drive, there will be a limited number of handicapped parking spaces available close to the venues. UK Blue Badge holders (or members of an equivalent national/international program, such as a US handicapped tag holders) will be able to book spaces in advance, free of charge. Visit this site to book your parking spaces: http://www.firstgroupgamestravel.com/blue-badge-parking/.

Inside the venue, attendees with special needs and/or limited mobility will have access to the complimentary Games Mobility service for assistance getting around.

Keep in mind that, once in London, there will be massive crowds throughout the city. The official London Olympics website warns that public transport systems may be under pressure, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Accessibility: Throughout the Games, there will be commentary and audio description, audio enhancements, accommodations for assistance dogs, and plenty of accessible restrooms.

The 2012 Paralympics: The 2012 Paralympic Games will include a variety of events including Wheelchair Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball, Paralympic Equestrian, Paralympic Cycling, Paralympic Swimming, Powerlifting and much more, for a total of 20 sports. Be sure to catch some of these inspiring, incredible events! Some tremendous athletes will be competing this year!

Best of luck with your planning and travels!  Enjoy the Games!
