New to Tampa for 2016: Norwegian Jade
Earlier this fall, Norwegian Jade replaced Norwegian Star in Port Tampa Bay; the vessel will sail to new Caribbean destinations including Roatan (Bay Islands), Honduras and Harvest Caye, Belize. Norwegian Jade’s seven day itinerary also includes Cozumel and Cost Maya, Mexico.
First built in 2006, the 2,402 passenger-ship is a member of Norwegian’s Jewel Class. The vessel, originally named Pride of Hawaii as a sister-ship for Pride of America, joined the Norwegian Jewel, and eventually joined by Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Gem to complete the class. Norwegian Jade was refurbished in 2011.
Having last sailed as Pride of Hawaii in 2008, the ship’s interior still has a Hawaiian-feel and embodies Norwegian’s “freestyle” mantra. Norwegian Jade features open seating and indoor/outdoor dining options ranging from a traditional American steakhouse, to specialized Japanese-fare in Tepannyaki, to go along with French, Italian, sushi, buffets as well as a 24-hour café and room service. Entertainment and activities onboard follow the vessel’s freestyle theme.
Norwegian Jade provides the guest constant action with two showrooms – the main two-level Stardust Theater with its Vegas and Broadway-style productions and the rooftop, Spinnaker Lounge which features activities during the day and a DJ into the wee hours of the morning. The vessel’s casino, Jade Club Casino, offers slots, blackjack, roulette, craps and was the first-at-sea with Texas Hold ‘Em cash game. While the casino is a popular venue in the evenings, passengers flock to the pool area and salon during the day.
Prior to returning to Europe, the vessel which served as a floating hotel for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia will receive a multi-million dollar make-over. The close to $40 million dollar refurbishment will include whole areas of the ship being reconfigured with an addition being The Cavern Club, a live music bar first installed last year on Norwegian Epic, along with all cabins being updated as well as The Haven suites and its private courtyard and facilities. The renovation will further modernize the restaurants, and menus will be more in-line with Norwegian’s sister cruise brand Oceania Cruises with entrees using more expensive ingredients.
Norwegian Jade will leave its temporary Tampa-home at the end of April with a transatlantic sailing to Southampton, England commencing on April 30th. The ship will begin sailing out of Hamburg in May. The newly renovated vessel will be one of five Norwegian ships sailing out of Europe in 2017 and will have two homeports – Southampton and Hamburg, Germany.
