Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens, & Opa Locka, Florida
The area of Hialeah and Hialeah Gardens is about 20 minutes north of the Miami International Airport and about 25 minutes north and west of Port Miami. It is centered around a large Cuban community and features lots of parks, creativity, and art.
Amelia Earhart Park is the largest in the area with five lakes, water skiing, wakeboarding, mountain bike trails, a petting zoo, boat rentals, a bark park, a farm, disc golf, a Tom Sawyer Island tree fort, and other park amenities. The park is named for the famous aviator who took off from Hialeah on her last ill-fated flight.
The area boasts not one, but two water parks: Bucky Dent Water Park and McDonald Water Park. Bucky Dent features two water slides, a zero-entrance pool and a splash park for kids. This park is smaller which people enjoy because the lines aren’t as long as at some of the larger parks.
McDonald Water Park offers a lazy river tube ride, a wave pool, a splash areas as well as a standard pool. The water park is part of a larger park that offers soccer and other park amenities.
A relatively new attraction in this area is the Leah Arts District. Here you can find large murals and food trucks along with other festivities that happen here.
There is also the Hialeah Garden of the Arts and a drive-by the AmerTec Building is must.
The final park mentioned here is not the same type of park. Hialeah Park Racing and Casino was originally built in the 1920s and has enjoyed such visitors as Frank Sinatra and Sir Winston Churchill. The Park is designated an Audubon Bird Sanctuary and enjoys a listing on the National Register of Historic Races. Even though it was closed for some time, the Park has been reopened and enthusiasts can thrill to the pounding of thoroughbred racehorse hooves once again!
While here, don’t forget to try your luck at the slots or poker tables. Who knows? You could be a winner with not only the ponies, but the one-armed jacks and the tables!
The neighboring city of Opa-Locka is notable for its original theme of Moorish architecture. This theme is reflected in public buidling such as the City Hall nearby historic Seabord Airway Railway Station.
