Norwegian Cruise Line was the first line to introduce cruisers to a “Freestyle Cruising” philosophy. With Freestyle Cruising, travelers choose their style of vacation; whether it’s laid-back or adventurous, a formal or casual dining experience, on a fixed schedule or more flexible – passengers on these handicap accessible cruises have a freedom of choice. This innovative, welcomed style of vacation has brought many new customers and has since been copied by some of the other lines. 

As passengers’ cruising comfort has always been Norwegian’s priority, welcoming guests on handicap cruises is no exception. Norwegian has a dedicated team of experienced professionals who are available to assist guests with disabilities and other challenges before, during and after the handicap cruises. Special Needs at Sea is proud to be the exclusive partner with Norwegian Cruise Line to fulfill the oxygen, mobility, and wheelchair rental needs for its guests.

All of the Norwegian ships have wheelchair accessible staterooms. The Norwegian Epic, Gem, Jade and Pearl have the most accessible staterooms, 27. These ships, along with the Norwegian Jewel and Pride of America also have alarm pull rods in the stateroom bathrooms and alarm buttons beside the beds. The Norwegian Epic, Gem, Jade, Pearl and Pride of America handicap cruises also have pool lifts for Jacuzzi entry. 

Onboard all eleven of Norwegian’s ships, the accessible rooms are equipped with grab bars, raised beds, shower seats, adjustable hanging rods in closets and extra wide doors. Norwegian also provides embarkation and debarkation assistance, accessible restrooms in a variety of public spaces as well as arrangement of accessible transportation to and from the vessel. 

For guests who are deaf or have hearing impairments, Norwegian provides several technological advancements for its guests. The Norwegian Sky, Sun and Pride of America have staterooms that are hard wired for guests who are deaf or low hearing which includes a visual-tactile alert system to alert guests if there is knocking at the door, telephone ringing, alarm ringing or smoke detection. On those vessels where rooms have not been hardwired, a portable kit with these alerts is available. The Norwegian Dawn, Gem, Jade, Jewel, Pearl, Star and Pride of America have Assisted Listening Devices for usage in the main theatre. Closed captioned TVs and closed captioned DVD rentals are available on the vessels. Pagers are also available on some of the vessels. 

For guests who are blind or have low vision, the ships have Braille indicators in the elevators, stateroom numbers in Braille text, closed captioned TVs and audio descriptive DVDs for rental. Service animals are welcomed onboard and a vessel orientation is available upon request.
