San Francisco, California

The city of San Francisco, California, is full of iconic images and places to visit.  Regardless of whether you like art, history, culture, cuisine, beaches, gardens, or science there is something for you to do here.  Why not try something new while you’re here as well?

Golden Gate Park might be considered the Central Park of the West Coast.

It’s a huge expanse that contains not only green space, but such attractions as the Conservatory of Flowers,

It also houses the Academy of Sciences which is home to a planetarium, an aquarium, a rainforest, and a natural history museum.

In addition, Golden Gate Park features a Japanese tea garden.

Another iconic area in San Francisco is Fisherman’s Wharf, where you can also find Pier 39.  This area is known for people watching, seafood and sea lions galore.  It’s also the place that the famous sourdough bread bowl made its debut in restaurants.

You can also find the original home of Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop here in Ghirardelli Square.  You can take a tour, create your own ice cream experience, sample confections and take some home to enjoy.

If you like more history in your vacation, take a boat ride over to Alcatraz Island.  The infamous prison there is notorious for being inescapable, or is it?  The movie Escape from Alcatraz Island highlights a daring attempt for which the escapees were never found.

If you are feeling adventuresome and want to experience a different culture, head to China Town.  You can browse in authentic shops and sample cuisine that reflects the true Chinese experience.

Time for a little more history!  The Haight-Ashbury area is steeped in the vibe of the Flower Power Generation.  This area was made famous by the Grateful Dead band as the place where they began their journey.  Take a walking tour and marvel at the colorful Victorian homes and storefronts.

For a different kind of experience, take a drive down Lombard Street, the most crooked street in the world with eight hairpin turns in one block.  At this writing, a per car fee to drive on the street is being considered so plan ahead.  You can also tour on foot as well as take other sponsored tours.

San Francisco also has an abundance of art galleries, but if you like to experience a fine art museum nothing is better than the renowned de Young Museum.  Here not only is art celebrated, but through the architecture of the museum, nature is also presented as art.
