San Juan, Puerto Rico
Located nine miles from San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, or as it’s unofficially known San Juan Airport, is Old San Juan. This area is also about a 9-minute walk from Port-O-Call, the cruise port in San Juan.
This picturesque area is home to shops, restaurants, and loads of history! There are even original cobblestone streets that are paved with blue stones.
You can check out not one, but two Spanish forts built to protect the island from marauders. The most famous of these is Castillo San Felipe del Morro (el Morro to the locals.) The other citadel is the Castillo San Cristobal. Explore old city walls, dungeons, tunnels, and original cannons.
San Juan is home to many historic churches, including the second oldest church in America, Catedral de San Juan. It is a prime example of medieval architecture under Spanish rule.
If you enjoy visiting museums, there are a number to choose. The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (Contemporary Art Museum) houses many beautiful works of art to admire.
Baseball fans are aware of the long history of Puerto Rican ball players. You can learn more about this tradition as well as Puerto Rico’s other sports legacies at the Museo del Deporte de Puerto Rico (Sports Museum of Puerto Rico.)
While you are visiting San Juan, you might choose to take in a performance at Teatro Tapia, built in 1832 and one of the oldest free-standing stages still in use under the United States flag. You might see a ballet, a musical performance, or a play. It’s also designated as the municipal coliseum so other events are held here as well.
Shopping is a favorite pastime of locals and visitors alike. You can find the largest mall in the Caribbean here, the Plaza las Americas, or if you prefer higher-end shopping head to the Mall of San Juan for international designer items.
