Tampa, Florida

At only 15 minutes’ drive from Tampa International Airport and six minutes from Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminal, downtown Tampa and the surrounding area is an activity-packed destination.  Restaurants and shops abound as well as museums and other interesting things to do.  Here are just a very few of these.

You can view animals of all sorts at the Lowry Park Zoo.  The zoo also known as ZooTampa provides educational opportunities as well as hosts special events such as Creatures of the Night at Halloween.  There is a tram you can ride to view elephants and other animals and young kids will enjoy the large splash area.

Of course, lots of people come to Tampa to visit the Busch Gardens theme park and neighboring Adventure Island Water Park.  There are lots of thrill rides at both parks such as SheiKra, Kumba, Falcon’s Fury, Stanley Falls Flume at Busch Gardens and Vanish Point, Runaway Rapids, Colossal Curl, and Calypso Coaster at Adventure Island to keep your adrenalin pumping, but there are also places to relax such as on a lazy river or by feeding the exotic birds.

If you’re a sports fan, there is no shortage of teams here to watch in all manner of sport.  The NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers play at the Raymond James Stadium and the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning play at the Amalie Arena.  In addition, Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays hold home games at the Tropicana Field in nearby St. Petersburg.  There is also a United Soccer League team called the Tampa Bay Rowdies if you like action on the pitch.

The Florida Aquarium provides a fantastic look at all kinds of marine life.  It also has outdoor spaces like a playground.  You can also arrange to have your own event there such as a wedding or corporate celebration.

This area teems with museums, both historical and more modern as well.  A few of note are the Tampa Bay History Center, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Ybor City State Museum, the Henry B. Plant Museum, and for something different the SS American Victory Mariners’ Memorial and Museum Ship.

The Tampa Bay History Center is located on the city’s River Walk and features exhibits that range from pirates to past US Presidents.  The Center also exhibits traveling collections so make sure to check what’s being offered before you visit.

The Tampa Museum of Art is situated right on the bay and also houses both permanent and traveling collections.  It’s also a popular venue for corporate events, weddings, and other events.

The SS American Victory Mariners’ Memorial and Museum Ship is a fully-functioning steamship from the 1940s era.  Take a tour to see what life was like during the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
