Naples is the third largest city in Italy aNafter Rome and Milan.  History, cuisine, and beautiful views reign supreme here.  It has a large port and plays host to major cruise lines who stop here to let their visitors roam these historical streets.

The National Archeological Museum features ancient Roman artifacts as well as Grecian and Renaissance items.

Very close to the port you will find the Castel Nuovo, also known as the Angevin Keep. This imposing medieval structure was built in 1279 and was the home of kings for Naples, Spain and Aragon until 1815.  It houses a large civic museum as well as offices for historical societies.

Take a walk on the wild side, or at least underground, and explore the city’s ancient Catacombs of San Gennaro.  This burial site consists of two levels with the older level dating back to third to fourth centuries.  Some of the burial areas are decorated with frescoes that have survived the ravages of time as well.

Another museum of note in Naples is the Sansevero Chapel which houses the famous Veiled Truth.  You can view the named statuary as well as some other astonishing works of art.

Towering in the distance from Naples is Mount Vesuvius, the infamous volcano that erupted in 79 AD and destroyed the city of Pompeii.  You can climb the still-active volcano to peer down into the crater if you’re feeling brave.

Pompeii is vast and awe-inspiring.  You really get a sense of life in the city just before the eruption.  Archaeologists have uncovered most of the ruins of the entire town including streets, small places of business, villas, and a vast plaza used for gatherings and various types of commerce.  They also uncovered the remains of people and animals who were trapped and preserved by the sheer amount of ash that rained down on the city.

No trip to the Naples area would be complete without a drive down the Amalfi Coast to the town of Amalfi.  Unbelievably picturesque vistas await you and the road itself is an adventure.  The area sports a large beach, hotels, and fantastic restaurants which offer delicious food and breathtaking views.
