Palmetto Bay, Florida

Drive a half an hour southwest from Port Miami or the same amount of time due south from Miami International Airport and you will come to the Village of Palmetto Bay.

The centerpiece attraction here is the Charles Deering Estate.  Mr. Deering, his brother James of neighboring Vizcaya fame, and their father were the founders and owners of Deering Harvester, which became International Harvester. The estate is a true treasure and has many opportunities to enjoy history, nature, music and the arts.  There are currently two remaining buildings on the property, the Stone House and the Richmond Cottage.

On offer are everything from concerts and performances, nature walks, opportunities for sunrise photography, wedding locations, festivals, tours of the house, ghost tours and much more.

The interior of the Stone House expresses the fine details of which the Deering family was accustomed, including a restored prohibition-era wine cellar.

Adjacent to the Stone House stands the original structure, the Richmond Cottage which once operated as an inn before being purchased by Mr. Deering as a winter home prior to building the Stone House.  While much more modest in comparison, the Richmond Cottage also displays a certain opulence by today’s standards, especially during the holidays.

As mentioned previously, the estate is host to multitudes of activities and learning opportunities.  There are butterfly walks, reptile walks, hiking trails, music performances of all kinds, and festivals.  The venue is also highly rated for weddings and corporate events.
